The College Interview

The part of the college application process that makes people the most nervous is probably the interview. At the interview you have to "sell yourself," and nobody is there to help you. At least with your application you can spend time on it, have someone else check it, and you basically have plenty of time to complete it. At the interview you're asked questions and have to think quickly, and answer immediately. You must explain yourself well enough so that you don't seem stupid, but not talk so much that you cause the interviewer to lose interest.Colleges have two methods of interviewing. Some have student interviewers, usually seniors, who make you feel very comfortable, partly because they are close to your age. Other colleges have an alumnus (or alumna) as an interviewer, or even a member of the college staff. It seems that these interviewers are more interested in your knowledge and view of specific topics. But no matter who your interviewer is, there are a few things you should do to get ready for the interview.1) Know your SAT scores, Achievement test scores, and grade point average with class rank.2) Know your extra-curricular activities and have a few you can concentrate on and talk about.3) Be up-to-date on current events. Many times an interviewer throws questions about them at you. Also, have an opinion on controversial issues and be ready to explain and defend it if necessary.4) Be ready to talk about the most recent book you've read and the book you liked the most.5) Be ready to explain specific reasons why you want to go to that college.If you're ready with these, you'll be at an advantage. It's an awful feeling to be at an interview and be asked a question that you don't know the answer to. If you go prepared, explain yourself, and most important, don't get nervous, your interview should go fine. n The College Interview Why haven't I gone to meet her yet? I need to get into this wonderful school, the school of my dreams. They know how much I want to be here. Can't they just accept me? I want it more than that girl over there looking at her nails. She acts like she's going to win them over so easily. But the admissions committee won't fall for her tricks. They are too smart. It is their job to find the students who are committed. They don't want someone who will fail. Have I ever failed a class? I need to be here.Look at the secretary, taking ages to write a simple letter. I bet she just wants me to wait forever. That way when it's my turn for the interview, I will be upset and not know what to say. But I will know what to say. I have spent two weeks of my life thinking about all the possible questions they could ask. They will see my dedication. I will get in.The door is opening. Is it my turn? No, it's that other girl's. She can walk through the door thinking that she will get in with her attitude, but I know better. They will ask her what she learned in the classes she visited and she won't know what to say. She just sat there smacking gum against her teeth. Crackle, crackle, smack, smack, that's what will be going through her mind. When I go in the room, I will be ready. Ready to tell everything that happened in each class. I will be ready.Why hasn't the secretary called me? Have I done something wrong? Maybe she doesn't remember that I'm waiting. Maybe I should put on some lip gloss so my lips won't be dry. I need to calm down. The secretary will sense if I am nervous. There, I just need to put on a little gloss to add a bit of color. The lip gloss is a simple color, but elegant. What is the interviewer wearing? Maybe I shouldn't have put any on. Oh no, what if I can't speak when the interviewer asks me questions? What if my lips stick together? She'll think I'm so stupid. They'll talk about me afterwards: "What an odd girl, can't even move her lips. She needs to be put aw ay. Maybe she's a mute?" Oh no! I have to take off this awful stuff!I need to stay calm. She is a very nice lady. Mommy told me that she went to Beaufort. She must have loved it here. Who wouldn't? I think the secretary went here, too. Oh, yes, really, you did too. How lucky are they? I hope I can go, too. I would take all of the science programs and the art classes. I would make more friends than gum girl. I would really enjoy it and they would be happy they accepted me. They'll see. I'll make honors.What if the gum girl gets in and I don't? She won't. She can't. They will see right through her. She can't be very smart if she chews gum during her interview. No one with half a brain chews gum during an interview! She should know better. I can't worry about her. After all, she isn't even my only threat, there are many more! Oh no, my stockings have a run. I hope they don't notice. It's from this stupid chair. I shouldn't have worn stockings! They are going to notice. I bet the secret ary saw me pull my leg away from the chair. I'll cross my legs - I'll be a contortionist.Oh, isn't that sweet. She told me that it's only going to be another couple of minutes. Well, thank you. Thank you for making me wait here forever and rip my tights and put on too much lip gloss! Maybe if I explain to her the reason that Beaufort should take me is because I'm so patient... the nerve, making me wait so long! They should just accept me right now! If that door doesn't open in the next minute, I'll open it myself. How much does gum girl have to talk about, anyway? Unbelievable.Wait! The doorknob is turning! Right this way, okay. I must be polite! Be sure to answer each question and give examples. Tell stories. After all, I am very amusing. They'll see that. Look at this school. What I would do to be here too, but I've blown my chance, wearing too much lip gloss. Why did I put it on in the first place? And that chair, it wanted me to be embarrassed. It hated me, I was sitting on it t oo long. So it had to go and eat my stockings! This evil room. Wait, but I'm here in the school. In my dream school where there are so many possibilities! I need to be here. Stay calm! Shake her hand, be firm, but not too firm. They will see I am different! I am an individual. Wait a second, look at the interviewer - she has a rip in her stockings, too. And, can it be? She has a heap of lip gloss on, too. That's amazing. How can that be? All of the things that went wrong for me happened to her too. Amazing! Oh, what a nice normal lady. A product of Beaufort! Like I will be! Amazing!

There is not much of a definite reasoning to why one bullies, and puts other people down, but there are speculations to this problem. Monopsony is a market structure in which there is only one buyer of a good or service. If there is only one customer for a certain good, that customer has monopsony power in the market for that good. Monopsony is analogous to monopoly, but monopsony has market power on the demand side rather than on the supply side. A common theoretical implication is that the price of the good is pushed down near the cost of production. The price is not predicted to go to zero because if it went below where the suppliers are willing to produce, they wont produce. In both of these works it is the lead female character, Queen Gertrude, and Nora Helmer, respectively, whose ignorance leads to the central conflict of the piece and consequently brings on their demise and loss of family as well. In the case of Shakespeare’s â€Å"Hamlet†, it is Queen Gertrude who married her late husband’s brother and unbeknown to her, her husbands murder as well. It is her act of hastily remarrying so soon right after her husband’s death, that leads to her son Hamlet’s somewhat mad behavior. In Ibsen’s â€Å"A Doll House† it is Nora, the wife of Torvald Helmer a prominent lawyer, who breaks not only the standard law but an unwritten socioeconomic law of the day as well, by forging her father’s name on a loan. Despite the good nature and intention behind his wife’s deed, Torvald does not support his wife’s actions, as it jeopardizes his good name and standing. Through their actions, both of these women brought upon much stress upon not only themselves but members of their family as well, allowing for the central conflicts to take place. In â€Å"Hamlet, Prince of Denmark†, it is Queen Gertrude’s marriage to Claudius that causes Hamlet to act as though he has gone crazy. His father’s death was hard enough on him, especially due to the fact that his Uncle Claudius was his father’s murderer. His mother’s hasty marriage to him only causes Hamlet to speculate about his mother’s involvement in his father’s death. Shakespeare does not make it entirely clear as to whether or not Gertrude took part in the elder Hamlet’s death, nor does he make certain as to whether or not she took part in any extramarital affairs with Claudius prior to the king’s death. It is this uncertainty that drives Hamlet to the brink of insanity. Hamlet is unsure as to whether or not he should hold his mother responsible for his father’s death, and this causes him to act â€Å"mad† towards the others in the court, especially his lover Ophelia. It is the ghost of the elder Ham let that tells his son not to harm his mother, that she is innocent of his murder. Hamlet listens to his father’s ghost but still resents his mother’s remarriage, seeing it as an insult to his father. Nora’s character is one of a somewhat ignorant and frivolous woman, almost as though she were a young child. She is oblivious to business matters, yet carries herself as though she is well aware of what she is doing. An example of this is when she becomes concerned about her husband Torvald’s health and decides to take out a loan to a finance a trip to Italy, which she believes will save her husband’s life. Unable to take out a loan due to the fact that she was a woman and had no property of her own, she forged her ailing fath er’s signature in order to obtain the loan. She blithely does this, without thinking about the risks involved, such as getting caught and losing her family. The devious Krogstad, the bank clerk who financed Nora’s loan, takes advantage of his knowledge of Nora’s action when his position at the bank becomes in jeopardy as Torvald prepares to take over at the bank. He informs her that she must persuade Torvald to keep Krogstad’s position at the bank, or Torvald will hear of Nora’s financial workings. This puts Nora in a tough spot as Torvald has already given Krogstad’s position to Ms. Linde, a childhood friend of Nora’s who was had been widowed. Nora’s financial workings had put her husband and herself into a very awkward position, one that compromised her husband’s reputation and his well standing position at the bank. Torvald, who always had been self conscious about himself, and very judgmental of others, scolds Nora a s though she were his child, and forbids her to continue raising their children. Within minutes after this takes place, a second note comes from Krogstad, telling Nora that a wonderful event has occurred in his life, and that he is no longer holding the loan against her. Torvald is ecstatic at this news, thrilled that his name and reputation won’t be tarnished. Nora, however, is still unhappy with herself and her current life, especially her now distorted relationship with her husband and children. She decides to walk out on her husband and children, leaving them for good. Both Nora and Gertrude’s actions had negative effects on their families and their families’ lives. Although Gertrude’s marriage to Claudius resulted in everyone’s death, it is still very similar to Nora’s illegal financial workings. Both lost their families, and in Gertrude’s cause she lost her life. Some works of literature serve a political purpose, especially ones that try to change society. Many times it is a female character that is trying to bring about change. Two such pieces of literature are Sophocles’ â€Å"Antigone† and Flannery O’Connor’s â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find†. In â€Å"Antigone† it is the title character Antigone who is trying to change the city of Thebes and the society of her time by overstepping the traditional female bounds and defying the king’s sovereignty. In â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find† It is the character of the grandmother who is trying to bring about reform although it may only be within her own family. She tries to bring her new age family of the ‘40s in touch with her old fashioned conservative family ideals. Both of these characters engulf themselves within the central conflict as a consequence of their ideals and motives, leaving them dead. Antigone is portrayed to be a martyr; such was the way she wanted to be portrayed throughout the play. She is seen as being ignorant, as she defies not only her uncle Creon, but also society itself, as she â€Å"leaped† over the traditional male/female social structure. Creon is put into an awkward situation by Antigone’s actions. She uses the law of the god’s against his own word, thus questioning his leadership. As self-consciousness as Creon is, he is now overly worried about the people’s reactions to Antigone’s behavior. He wants to follow his word, thus not showing his in competency, yet he does not want to turn her into a martyr. Antigone, aware of the predicament she has put herself into, continues her crusade by not showing any additional respect to Creon’s sovereignty, showing that there is a natural equality amongst the sexes. Creon, having no way out of the situation, opts to have Antigone killed, making her a martyr, thus leading to his own demise as the King of Thebes. She believes that the children have no respect for her, due to the changing society. She tries to rectify this problem by teaching them a lesson in the old way of things. She uses the serial killer known as the â€Å"Misfit† as an excuse to not go down to Florida, stating that she would never put her children in danger like that. Her attempts of diverting the family’s vacation, however, are what cost her not only her life but her family’s as well. If it were not for her little detour to find the plantation house, that was in a totally different state, they would never had come across the â€Å"Misfit†, and her grave mistake was recognizing the â€Å"Misfit† and letting that be known. It is due to the fact that she tries to teach her family an old fashion lesson in conservatism that they were all gunned down in the woods. This gives the reader the notion that conservatism is dying in a very dangerous world as O’Connor saw it in the 1940’s. All of these women were the cause of conflict in their respective stories. Three of the four lost their lives, while the fourth changed her life forever. Their despises were either characterized by their ignorance or martyrdom however their actions preceded them. A Frightening Experience Essay I sit under the old gold plated clock, and I listen to its slow ticking. I stare down at the old cobble stone street, and feel the ice-cold raindrops rolling down my numb warm cheeks. The rain falls down from the bright stars which you can only see in a distance, I am glad for the rain, as the raindrops mix with my tears and I can perhaps hide my feelings from him. We had decided to meet here once again, I know I have to go through with my plan or else I must begin to prepare myself for the worst. If Kyle ever sees me here, I know he will never forgive me, but I prefer to see him alive and not talking to me, rather than losing him for ever. Ever since they started coming after him, I remember images from our past, I feel as if I am flipping through a very old photo-album. The memories are just like old photographs which you cannot simply let go of. In the distance I can see a dark silhouette heading towards me; I look around trying to calm myself down. Everything inside of me is telling me to run as fast as I can away from here, yet I stand firmly at my spot. He looks up at me showing me a deep-set of brown eyes, the way he is looking at me I feel as if he can read my private thoughts and I try to hide my emotions away. I concentrate on his features, and can hear him in a very quiet whisper say Get out of here now, for your own sake.  Without another second passing, I begin to run, after years of practicing the craft I am finally able to shield my emotions, and begin to whisper protection spells under my breath. I run as fast as I can, feeling the raindrops prickling my skin as I run against the direction of the wind. I glance up at the dark sky hoping for some sort of rescue, but I see that I am surrounded by towering concrete buildings making me feel trapped. I hear someone running behind me, but I know it is not him. I begin to feel that I have fallen beyond the sense of time, and everything around me feels as if it is a surreal world. Bang, I feel something heavy hitting me, and I feel my knees loosing their strength, a few seconds later I have hit the roads cobble stone surface. I feel my eyelids become heavy, and I visualise Kyle as I remember him from this morning. Im sorry Kyle I have let you down. Be Careful.
