Case Study, Amazon: From Book Seller to Service Provider Essay

Niklas Zennstrom expressed: â€Å"When we take a gander at contributing, we generally consider ‘how solid is this, how likely is it that someone is going to duplicate this. ‘ E-trade will in general be something simple to duplicate in light of the fact that it’s execution. † Amazon is the world’s biggest online retailer since the organization opened in the carport of Jeff Bezos’, and its yearly are more than 10 billion dollars. Numerous organizations along these lines have replicated Amazon and now vie for web based business benefits; in this way organizations like Google and Microsoft become an issue for Amazon. This has impelled Amazon to create items for other web based business organizations, and now Amazon offers business-to - business internet business. This paper will talk about whether Amazon is moving endlessly from its center competency of a main online retailer, and if this is an astute system. A concise depiction of the Amazon database, how Amazon utilizes every segment, and what information the board issues might be experienced by Amazon, the connection between information, data, and how Amazon handles each will be remembered for this paper. To endure the attack of organizations like Google, Amazon has set out to flexibly a progression of registering, stockpiling and different administrations that make its foundation accessible to organizations and individuals to help them oversee the mechanical and strategic pieces of their organization. Amazon just uses 10 percent of its handling capacity, and offering these extra administrations won't impede different portions of the online retailer. This is a move away from its center ability; be that as it may, this is a clever choice with respect to the Amazon Company. This methodology permits the organization to help profit by utilizing assets as of now close by. This is like a proprietor choosing to lease the unfilled loft as a capacity unit, since it was not utilized by a family. The space was at that point there the proprietor simply found another utilization for the empty space. The Amazon database is comprised of the Simple Storage Service (S3), the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), and the Mechanical Turk. These administrations programs are an endeavor by Amazon to be an important rival in the following improvement of the Internet. The Simple Storage Service permits organizations to distribution center information and applications on Amazon plate drives at 15 pennies for every gigabyte every month. For 10 pennies an hour Amazon offers preparing power on the Elastic Compute Cloud which is equivalent to one simple server. The Mechanical Turk is the most mind boggling of the three Amazon database parts, and is commission based. Rainer, Turban wrote in the: Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business, second Edition, that the: â€Å"Mechanical Turk administration joins handling power with systems of genuine individuals who are paid to do the sort of work that machines can't progress admirably, for example, perceiving improper substance in pictures or interpreting sound. Organizations post bits of work onto the Mechanical Turk and pay individuals on the web, for which Amazon gets a 10 percent commission. † The information the board issue that may be experienced by Amazon is how much space they can lease before it removes reality from the online retailer framework. A subsequent issue would be what Amazon must do when Google and Microsoft begin to duplicate and create comparative items at a lower cost. Amazon focus on declining deals by expanding its profitability to guarantee financial specialists will see the benefit development they expected structure the online retailer. Amazon chose to offer administrations that no other online retailer gave and this is the means by which they handled all their present issues. Amazon is helping a huge number of organizations store and investigate their information data, consequently every one of the three projects can be utilized together by a customer to store messages after they check them for malware, and see what catchphrases attract planned purchasers to their destinations. I figure Amazon will succeed objective to reform retailing as long as they see how to adjust rapidly in business.

The College Interview

The part of the college application process that makes people the most nervous is probably the interview. At the interview you have to "sell yourself," and nobody is there to help you. At least with your application you can spend time on it, have someone else check it, and you basically have plenty of time to complete it. At the interview you're asked questions and have to think quickly, and answer immediately. You must explain yourself well enough so that you don't seem stupid, but not talk so much that you cause the interviewer to lose interest.Colleges have two methods of interviewing. Some have student interviewers, usually seniors, who make you feel very comfortable, partly because they are close to your age. Other colleges have an alumnus (or alumna) as an interviewer, or even a member of the college staff. It seems that these interviewers are more interested in your knowledge and view of specific topics. But no matter who your interviewer is, there are a few things you should do to get ready for the interview.1) Know your SAT scores, Achievement test scores, and grade point average with class rank.2) Know your extra-curricular activities and have a few you can concentrate on and talk about.3) Be up-to-date on current events. Many times an interviewer throws questions about them at you. Also, have an opinion on controversial issues and be ready to explain and defend it if necessary.4) Be ready to talk about the most recent book you've read and the book you liked the most.5) Be ready to explain specific reasons why you want to go to that college. If you're ready with these, you'll be at an advantage. It's an awful feeling to be at an interview and be asked a question that you don't know the answer to. If you go prepared, explain yourself, and most important, don't get nervous, your interview should go fine. n The College Interview Why haven't I gone to meet her yet? I need to get into this wonderful school, the school of my dreams. They know how much I want to be here. Can't they just accept me? I want it more than that girl over there looking at her nails. She acts like she's going to win them over so easily. But the admissions committee won't fall for her tricks. They are too smart. It is their job to find the students who are committed. They don't want someone who will fail. Have I ever failed a class? I need to be here.Look at the secretary, taking ages to write a simple letter. I bet she just wants me to wait forever. That way when it's my turn for the interview, I will be upset and not know what to say. But I will know what to say. I have spent two weeks of my life thinking about all the possible questions they could ask. They will see my dedication. I will get in.The door is opening. Is it my turn? No, it's that other girl's. She can walk through the door thinking that she will get in with her attitude, but I know better. They will ask her what she learned in the classes she visited and she won't know what to say. She just sat there smacking gum against her teeth. Crackle, crackle, smack, smack, that's what will be going through her mind. When I go in the room, I will be ready. Ready to tell everything that happened in each class. I will be ready. Why hasn't the secretary called me? Have I done something wrong? Maybe she doesn't remember that I'm waiting. Maybe I should put on some lip gloss so my lips won't be dry. I need to calm down. The secretary will sense if I am nervous. There, I just need to put on a little gloss to add a bit of color. The lip gloss is a simple color, but elegant. What is the interviewer wearing? Maybe I shouldn't have put any on. Oh no, what if I can't speak when the interviewer asks me questions? What if my lips stick together? She'll think I'm so stupid. They'll talk about me afterwards: "What an odd girl, can't even move her lips. She needs to be put aw ay. Maybe she's a mute?" Oh no! I have to take off this awful stuff!I need to stay calm. She is a very nice lady. Mommy told me that she went to Beaufort. She must have loved it here. Who wouldn't? I think the secretary went here, too. Oh, yes, really, you did too. How lucky are they? I hope I can go, too. I would take all of the science programs and the art classes. I would make more friends than gum girl. I would really enjoy it and they would be happy they accepted me. They'll see. I'll make honors. What if the gum girl gets in and I don't? She won't. She can't. They will see right through her. She can't be very smart if she chews gum during her interview. No one with half a brain chews gum during an interview! She should know better. I can't worry about her. After all, she isn't even my only threat, there are many more! Oh no, my stockings have a run. I hope they don't notice. It's from this stupid chair. I shouldn't have worn stockings! They are going to notice. I bet the secret ary saw me pull my leg away from the chair. I'll cross my legs - I'll be a contortionist.Oh, isn't that sweet. She told me that it's only going to be another couple of minutes. Well, thank you. Thank you for making me wait here forever and rip my tights and put on too much lip gloss! Maybe if I explain to her the reason that Beaufort should take me is because I'm so patient... the nerve, making me wait so long! They should just accept me right now! If that door doesn't open in the next minute, I'll open it myself. How much does gum girl have to talk about, anyway? Unbelievable.Wait! The doorknob is turning! Right this way, okay. I must be polite! Be sure to answer each question and give examples. Tell stories. After all, I am very amusing. They'll see that. Look at this school. What I would do to be here too, but I've blown my chance, wearing too much lip gloss. Why did I put it on in the first place? And that chair, it wanted me to be embarrassed. It hated me, I was sitting on it t oo long. So it had to go and eat my stockings! This evil room. Wait, but I'm here in the school. In my dream school where there are so many possibilities! I need to be here. Stay calm! Shake her hand, be firm, but not too firm. They will see I am different! I am an individual. Wait a second, look at the interviewer - she has a rip in her stockings, too. And, can it be? She has a heap of lip gloss on, too. That's amazing. How can that be? All of the things that went wrong for me happened to her too. Amazing! Oh, what a nice normal lady. A product of Beaufort! Like I will be! Amazing!

Definition of Monopsony

Monopsony is a market structure in which there is only one buyer of a good or service. If there is only one customer for a certain good, that customer has monopsony power in the market for that good. Monopsony is analogous to monopoly, but monopsony has market power on the demand side rather than on the supply side. A common theoretical implication is that the price of the good is pushed down near the cost of production. The price is not predicted to go to zero because if it went below where the suppliers are willing to produce, they wont produce. Market power is a continuum from perfectly competitive to monopsony and there is an extensive practice/industry/science of measuring the degree of market power. As an example, for workers in an isolated company town, created by and dominated by one employer, that employer is a monopsonist for some kinds of employment. For some kinds of U.S. medical care, the government program Medicare is a monopsony.

Reactor operators control the chain reaction created by nuclear fission to regulate the amount of heat generated and energy produced. ii. The fuel for this process is the metal uranium. It must be enriched before it can be used for producing energy because mined uranium is around 99.3% uranium-238, it does not split easily when exposed to neutrons, which makes it a poor fuel. The other 0.7% of mined uranium is uranium-235, which makes excellent fuel. The enrichment process consists of increasing the ratio of uranium-235 to uranium-238. B. The medical field also benefits from nuclear energy. Nuclear medicine is a field of medicine in which radioactive materials are used to diagnose and treat medical disorders i. None Provided84 Essay Example For Students

None Provided84 Essay In many works of Literature women play a controversial role, one in which their actions are the cause of conflict in many situations. There are more often then not two reasons for this. One reason why the female character is always caught in the center of the conflict is ignorance, such is the case Shakespeare’s â€Å"Hamlet; Prince of Denmark† with the character Queen Gertrude as an example. The second reason why women are the cause of the central conflict are that in many instances they are trying to make a stand against society by defying what society holds to be the norm. An example of this would be Sophocles’ â€Å"Antigone†. In either case, the woman character is cause of the central conflict within the piece and therefore holds much responsibility for the outcome of the piece, as well as the state the reader is in after they finish reading the piece. Two pieces of literature that demonstrate how a woman’s ignorance can lead to the cause of conflict are Shakespeare’s â€Å"Hamlet; Prince of Denmark†, and Henrik Ibsen’s â€Å"A Doll House†. In both of these works it is the lead female character, Queen Gertrude, and Nora Helmer, respectively, whose ignorance leads to the central conflict of the piece and consequently brings on their demise and loss of family as well. In the case of Shakespeare’s â€Å"Hamlet†, it is Queen Gertrude who married her late husband’s brother and unbeknown to her, her husbands murder as well. It is her act of hastily remarrying so soon right after her husband’s death, that leads to her son Hamlet’s somewhat mad behavior. In Ibsen’s â€Å"A Doll House† it is Nora, the wife of Torvald Helmer a prominent lawyer, who breaks not only the standard law but an unwritten socioeconomic law of the day as well, by forging her father’s name on a loan. Despite the good nature and intention behind his wife’s deed, Torvald does not support his wife’s actions, as it jeopardizes his good name and standing. Through their actions, both of these women brought upon much stress upon not only themselves but members of their family as well, allowing for the central conflicts to take place. In â€Å"Hamlet, Prince of Denmark†, it is Queen Gertrude’s marriage to Claudius that causes Hamlet to act as though he has gone crazy. His father’s death was hard enough on him, especially due to the fact that his Uncle Claudius was his father’s murderer. His mother’s hasty marriage to him only causes Hamlet to speculate about his mother’s involvement in his father’s death. Shakespeare does not make it entirely clear as to whether or not Gertrude took part in the elder Hamlet’s death, nor does he make certain as to whether or not she took part in any extramarital affairs with Claudius prior to the king’s death. It is this uncertainty that drives Hamlet to the brink of insanity. Hamlet is unsure as to whether or not he should hold his mother responsible for his father’s death, and this causes him to act â€Å"mad† towards the others in the court, especially his lover Ophelia. It is the ghost of the elder Ham let that tells his son not to harm his mother, that she is innocent of his murder. Hamlet listens to his father’s ghost but still resents his mother’s remarriage, seeing it as an insult to his father. As a result Hamlet remains in his â€Å"mad† state, and in the classical tragic ending, all are dead except for the loyal Horatio, who is left to retell the story. .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 , .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .postImageUrl , .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 , .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:hover , .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:visited , .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:active { border:0!important; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:active , .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834 .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubbfebf74fda39cebad6a102126e5a834:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Why Liberal Arts EssayIn â€Å"A Doll House† It is the character Nora who is the cause of the conflict within the story. Nora’s character is one of a somewhat ignorant and frivolous woman, almost as though she were a young child. She is oblivious to business matters, yet carries herself as though she is well aware of what she is doing. An example of this is when she becomes concerned about her husband Torvald’s health and decides to take out a loan to a finance a trip to Italy, which she believes will save her husband’s life. Unable to take out a loan due to the fact that she was a woman and had no property of her own, she forged her ailing fath er’s signature in order to obtain the loan. She blithely does this, without thinking about the risks involved, such as getting caught and losing her family. The devious Krogstad, the bank clerk who financed Nora’s loan, takes advantage of his knowledge of Nora’s action when his position at the bank becomes in jeopardy as Torvald prepares to take over at the bank. He informs her that she must persuade Torvald to keep Krogstad’s position at the bank, or Torvald will hear of Nora’s financial workings. This puts Nora in a tough spot as Torvald has already given Krogstad’s position to Ms. Linde, a childhood friend of Nora’s who was had been widowed. Nora’s financial workings had put her husband and herself into a very awkward position, one that compromised her husband’s reputation and his well standing position at the bank. Torvald, who always had been self conscious about himself, and very judgmental of others, scolds Nora a s though she were his child, and forbids her to continue raising their children. Within minutes after this takes place, a second note comes from Krogstad, telling Nora that a wonderful event has occurred in his life, and that he is no longer holding the loan against her. Torvald is ecstatic at this news, thrilled that his name and reputation won’t be tarnished. Nora, however, is still unhappy with herself and her current life, especially her now distorted relationship with her husband and children. She decides to walk out on her husband and children, leaving them for good. Both Nora and Gertrude’s actions had negative effects on their families and their families’ lives. Although Gertrude’s marriage to Claudius resulted in everyone’s death, it is still very similar to Nora’s illegal financial workings. Both lost their families, and in Gertrude’s cause she lost her life. Some works of literature serve a political purpose, especially ones that try to change society. Many times it is a female character that is trying to bring about change. Two such pieces of literature are Sophocles’ â€Å"Antigone† and Flannery O’Connor’s â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find†. In â€Å"Antigone† it is the title character Antigone who is trying to change the city of Thebes and the society of her time by overstepping the traditional female bounds and defying the king’s sovereignty. In â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find† It is the character of the grandmother who is trying to bring about reform although it may only be within her own family. She tries to bring her new age family of the ‘40s in touch with her old fashioned conservative family ideals. Both of these characters engulf themselves within the central conflict as a consequence of their ideals and motives, leaving them dead. Antigone is portrayed to be a martyr; such was the way she wanted to be portrayed throughout the play. She is seen as being ignorant, as she defies not only her uncle Creon, but also society itself, as she â€Å"leaped† over the traditional male/female social structure. Creon is put into an awkward situation by Antigone’s actions. She uses the law of the god’s against his own word, thus questioning his leadership. As self-consciousness as Creon is, he is now overly worried about the people’s reactions to Antigone’s behavior. He wants to follow his word, thus not showing his in competency, yet he does not want to turn her into a martyr. Antigone, aware of the predicament she has put herself into, continues her crusade by not showing any additional respect to Creon’s sovereignty, showing that there is a natural equality amongst the sexes. Creon, having no way out of the situation, opts to have Antigone killed, making her a martyr, thus leading to his own demise as the King of Thebes. Antigone’s message, however, was still received by the people of Thebes, and the reader as well. .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 , .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .postImageUrl , .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 , .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:hover , .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:visited , .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:active { border:0!important; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:active , .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85 .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u990c3784c779bb691d78c8fffe5b3b85:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Essay On RelaxationIn â€Å"A Goodman is Hard to Find† the character of the grandmother represents conservatism in a quickly changing society. She is constantly coming into conflict with her new age family of the 1940’s. To make a comparison to modern day times, the grandmother in O’Connor’s story is very much similar to the grandmother on the CBS television series â€Å"Everybody Loves Raymond†. She persists on changing her family’s vacations plans to go to Florida, suggesting they go to East Tennessee instead. She believes that the children have no respect for her, due to the changing society. She tries to rectify this problem by teaching them a lesson in the old way of things. She uses the serial killer known as the â€Å"Misfit† as an excuse to not go down to Florida, stating that she would never put her children in danger like that. Her attempts of diverting the family’s vacation, however, are what cost her not only her life but her family’s as well. If it were not for her little detour to find the plantation house, that was in a totally different state, they would never had come across the â€Å"Misfit†, and her grave mistake was recognizing the â€Å"Misfit† and letting that be known. It is due to the fact that she tries to teach her family an old fashion lesson in conservatism that they were all gunned down in the woods. This gives the reader the notion that conservatism is dying in a very dangerous world as O’Connor saw it in the 1940’s. All of these women were the cause of conflict in their respective stories. Three of the four lost their lives, while the fourth changed her life forever. Their despises were either characterized by their ignorance or martyrdom however their actions preceded them. A Frightening Experience Essay Example For Students

A Frightening Experience Essay I sit under the old gold plated clock, and I listen to its slow ticking. I stare down at the old cobble stone street, and feel the ice-cold raindrops rolling down my numb warm cheeks. The rain falls down from the bright stars which you can only see in a distance, I am glad for the rain, as the raindrops mix with my tears and I can perhaps hide my feelings from him. We had decided to meet here once again, I know I have to go through with my plan or else I must begin to prepare myself for the worst. If Kyle ever sees me here, I know he will never forgive me, but I prefer to see him alive and not talking to me, rather than losing him for ever. Ever since they started coming after him, I remember images from our past, I feel as if I am flipping through a very old photo-album. The memories are just like old photographs which you cannot simply let go of. In the distance I can see a dark silhouette heading towards me; I look around trying to calm myself down. Everything inside of me is telling me to run as fast as I can away from here, yet I stand firmly at my spot. He looks up at me showing me a deep-set of brown eyes, the way he is looking at me I feel as if he can read my private thoughts and I try to hide my emotions away. I see him tall and frightening, I feel a sudden wave of embarrassment and intimidation in front of him, yet I remember that once I had such an affinitive sense of trust in him. Hi, Morgan. I hear him practically murmur, and his cold voice penetrates through the deafening silence which surrounds us. I stretch my senses and I know that something does not feel right. I know that he never liked Kyle, and I know he thinks that I shouldnt go against him for someone that will never truly understand who I am. I feel odd knowing that his is how he feels, yet I mustnt as it is true that we both come from the same blood line, and it may seem surprising but we have many things in common. I look at his deep set of brown eyes which almost mirror my own eyes, and I can trace that maybe he does understand the reasons I cannot let him hurt Kyle. I begin to talk in a slow and steady voice, I tell him that I will do anything as long as they stop going after Kyle. He looks at me with a puzzled expression and I sense him trying to tell me something, but he doesnt, I recognise that look on his animated face. I concentrate on his features, and can hear him in a very quiet whisper say Get out of here now, for your own sake.  Without another second passing, I begin to run, after years of practicing the craft I am finally able to shield my emotions, and begin to whisper protection spells under my breath. I run as fast as I can, feeling the raindrops prickling my skin as I run against the direction of the wind. I glance up at the dark sky hoping for some sort of rescue, but I see that I am surrounded by towering concrete buildings making me feel trapped. I hear someone running behind me, but I know it is not him. I begin to feel that I have fallen beyond the sense of time, and everything around me feels as if it is a surreal world. Bang, I feel something heavy hitting me, and I feel my knees loosing their strength, a few seconds later I have hit the roads cobble stone surface. I feel my eyelids become heavy, and I visualise Kyle as I remember him from this morning. Im sorry Kyle I have let you down. Be Careful. Those are my last thoughts before I have fallen into the darkness.

Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences essays

Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences essays In 1979 a young graduate student in cognitive-development psychology, Howard Gardner and a group of colleagues received a grant from the Bernard Van Leer Foundation. The money was intended to, ...produce a scholarly synthesis of what had been established in the biological, social, and cultural sciences about the nature and realization of human potential ( Gardner, 1999, p.32 ). Four years later, Gardner published his discoveries, including his infamous Theory of Multiple Intelligences, in the 1983 book, Frames of Mind ( Gardner, 1999 ). Gardners multiple intelligence theory originally contained seven intelligences, and defined an intelligence as, the ability to solve problems or to create products that are valued within one or more cultural settings ( Gardner, 1993, Gardner,1999, p.33). Since that time, Gardner has expanded his list to ten, following the addition of three more theoretical intelligences ( Gardner, 1999 ). His theory has revolutionized the methods in which children are taught, and spawned new methods of recognizing an individuals cognitive abilities. Linguistic, or verbal, intelligence is identified as the first of the seven intelligences. Children with this kind of intelligence enjoy reading, writing, or other creative tasks such as story telling or crossword puzzles ( Abernathy, 1999 ). These children will be exceptionally apt at understanding the order and meaning of words, persuading others, and more easily recognizing and utilizing the humorous aspects of language( Edwords, 1999 ). T.S. Eliot possessed this intelligence, as evidenced by his creation of a magazine, dubbed Fireside, at the age of ten. He composed eight complete issues in a three-day period, each including poems, adventure stories, humor, and a gossip column ( Gardner, 1993 ). A compliment to those with verbal intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence includes various abilities such as...

A2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

A2 - Essay Example The choice of the procurement strategy is justified and maintained throughout the report. The project involves construction of road for the large factory site; the road plan also includes two bridges. As the design phase of the project is complete the next step is to move forward and devise a procurement strategy. Selection of the procurement strategy is the very first phase for the construction of the project. 1. Design and Build: A design and build contract is a unique type of project delivery system used in construction and renovation projects. The client starts with the architectural design after which the tendering is done for the general contracting companies. The client awards the entire contract to a single company which is responsible for all the design and construction work required to complete the project. This system allows the client to deal with a single source throughout the duration of the contract rather than coordinating between various parties. This type of contract simplifies the work of the client. 2. Design, Build and Operate: The design build and operate approach to contracting combines design, construction and long-term operation if a facility into one single contract awarded to a single contractor. The contractor usually is a joint venture or consortium representing all the disciplines and skills required for the DBO arrangement. 3. Design, Build, Operate and Maintain: In this approach the asset is also operated and maintained by the contractor for an extended period of time of 5-15 years or more. It is most likely that the contract conditions are to maintain the asset in a certain state. 4. Traditional Approaches: In addition to these, there are several traditional approaches for a procurement strategy contract under the ECC, these include TSC (training services contract), TSSC (Technical Support Services Contract), PSC (Professional Services Contract) but

M.I.C.E. (Meeting, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) Essay

M.I.C.E. (Meeting, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) - Essay Example Justification to this context can be provided by taking consideration of the reliance of multiple business oriented nations on this tourism and event management segment (ICCA - International Congress and Convention Association, 2013). In accordance to the projections made by the statistical data, the M.I.C.E business, after the economic recession of 2009 have made significant amount of contribution in terms of supporting the destabilised state of the economies of multiple small and large nations. For instance, between the periods of 2009 to 2013, the reliance of global superpowers such as China and the US has majorly increased over the conduction of M.I.C.E business conferences. Irrespective of all these, the arrangement and conduction of an M.I.C.E conference is not an easy job and requires availability of appropriate count of resources. This is due to the fact that all the necessary bookings and arrangements are needed to be done in advance and should project perfect alignment with the client side requirements. Taking these aspects into consideration, the discussion will majorly focus towards the conduction of an M.I.C.E business conference arrangement for a total count of 250 delegates for a period of 3 days. In addition, the discussion will also focus towards the identification and analysis of every possible green issue that might emerge within such conference meetings. The details regarding such green issues and conference planning has been provided in the undermined sections of this discussion. Benefits of Employee Collaboration Essay Example for Free

Benefits of Employee Collaboration Essay Within the modern workplace, there is an ongoing debate as to if traditional problem solving or employee collaboration produces the best results. Even though some people see employee collaboration as a waste of time, employee collaboration should be encouraged because not only can it benefit the company, it gives employees the opportunity to grow. When an employer encourages open collaboration with its employees in order to solve a problem, many positive outcomes can occur. In his article Improving Efficiency by Improving Employee Collaboration Brian Middle stated â€Å"Tasks can be completed more effectively since individuals are concentrating on areas that they are well versed in and not in areas they struggle with. † This thought process takes the pressure off of one individual to have all the answers to every problem in front of them. Yes, it is up to the person in charge to ultimately make the final choice as to how to handle a problem, but expecting them to have all the information at any given time is not good business practice. Bringing together a team to solve a problem creates an atmosphere of individual and company growth by giving each employee an opportunity to succeed, and having a more effective way of completing the tasks. At my own place of employment, a lot of the decisions are solely made by one individual on a day to day basis. This individual, while he is a fairly good leader is in no position to make choices concerning my work. As required by the state I live in, in order to perform my duties as a Wastewater Operator, a large amount of schooling and licensing must be obtained. With my job, I must make decisions about what to do when a large amount of rain has fallen in a short time frame. The process, in my opinion should be a combined decision by me, the other operator, and the Town Manager. The operators should be able to give him the vital information about what would happen with each scenario, our professional opinion as to how to best handle it, and then discuss it. This process would take roughly 10 – 15 minutes, and wouldn’t affect the overall plant performance. However, this is not the case. We are told what he wants us to do without our input, and this has at times led to bad outcomes. The mine-is-better habit seems to be the issue within our organization. Working with a lot of older gentlemen, I have noticed that any suggestion given to someone is immediately shot down due to egos. Instead of taking a little bit of time to review all the information from individuals with a more knowledgeable background on the subject, a decision is made from one persons point of view. Luckily, for all major decisions that do not need immediate attention; we have a Town Council who must put it to a vote. As simple as this seems it should be, there are some mine-is-better habits within the council as well. There are many routes I could take in order for my manager to overcome his habit of mine-is-better when making decisions. One of the approaches I can take would be to encourage him to take a moment to listen to what options we have, and how it would best suit him and the town to think things through. Giving him all of the information at hand, even if he hasn’t asked for it plants the seed within his own mind to consider everything before coming to a conclusion. The other option I can think of, is taking it solely out of his hands by involving the Department of Environmental Management. Having them simply explain to him that it is up to the operators themselves to draw the conclusion on what is best based upon the professional standing they have may help him realize that his way is not always the best way of doing things. The town I live in and work for would greatly benefit from open collaboration with its employees. Many of us our highly trained individuals, who take great pride in their field of choice. With so many different departments, no one person can expect to know how everything operates and works within the entire town. Many laws and regulations confront us daily while we perform even the simplest of tasks. Being able to talk to each other, to know how each decision made can affect the other departments and their processes can help us avoid unwanted extra paperwork and fines.

Polyethylene :: Polymer Plastic

German Chemist Hans von Pechmann first synthesized Polyethylene by accident in 1898 by heating diazomethane. His colleagues characterized the waxy substance polyethylene due to the fact that they recognized that it consisted of long ethene chains. It was then first industrially synthesized by accident in 1933 by applying extremely high pressure to ethylene and benzaldehyde. Over the years, development of polyethylene has increased due to the additions of catalyst. This makes ethylene polymerization possible at lower temperatures and pressures.1 Polyethylene is a polymer that is made of a long chain of CH2 monomers bonded together. It is one of the most commonly used polymers in everyday items. Grocery bags, soap bottles, children’s toys, and even bullet proof vests are all made from polyethylene.2 This polymer is very versatile and can be used in many materials but this all depends on the way that the polymer is chemically made or enhanced. There are many different types of polyethylene classified by density and branching. 2 Higher density polyethylene is very linear and has no branching. Lower density polyethylene is a result of some of the carbon atoms bonding with other polyethylene chains instead of hydrogen atoms. Cross-linking is another way in which the polymer can be made stronger. This involves ultraviolet radiation that bombards the polymer with electrons and formulates bonds between the molecular chains of the polymers. This is like linear polyethylene but different in that it is more impact resistant, and it has a much higher density. This allows it to be stored or be used with different chemicals that would normally cause the polymer to desolve.3 This can start to become a problem because as the polymer continues to become chemically enhanced. So the ways of dissolving and recycling the polymer become more difficult. Other alterations such as dying the polymer are less cost efficient to recycle and can be more difficult as well. There are certain types of HDPE (high density polyethylene) that are blown into shapes such as bottles. Different chemicals are used in this process and therefore have to be separated into their own category when recycling. The reason people have moved away from landfill dumping and moved towards recycling is due to the fact that it is much more cost effective to recycle compared to paying engineers and environmentalist to designing landfills.4 The HDPE can also be mechanically recycled through curb side pick ups.

The Crucible and The Great Fear Comparison Essay

Theodore Roosevelt once said, â€Å"We have nothing to fear but fear itself.† What is fear? Fear can be a noun or a verb. In the noun form, it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. In the verb form, it is to be afraid of someone or something that is dangerous, painful, or threatening. If one person looks into fear, then that person becomes feared. But imagine a whole society or community looking into fear. The fear not only gets larger as it spreads, but it also gets more fearful than it already is. For example, when Putnam says that Tituba should be hanged, she says â€Å"No,no, don’t hang Tituba!...† (Miller 931) and she starts to confess four names that she â€Å"saw with the Devil†.
